About the first quarter of a mile of the trail is a reltively flat walk down the middle of the canyon that faces east from the ranger station. The trail crosses a trickle of water a the top of a 20 foot waterfall and continues along the south side of the canyon. The vegetation along this first half mile is fairly thick and shades the path nicely. At about the half mile mark the trail climbs the side of the canyon out onto a meadow in which begins the descent into the canyon below and eventually to Happy Hollows and the Grotto. On our first trip the meadow was green and wet, the path a slippery mud slide. This time the meadow of wild oats was filled with white and purple poppies and empty wild oat heads.
