October 30, 2005
The following photos show some of the progress on the Mojave Desert and Southwest Mountains Railroad as of October 29, 2005. It got dark before I quit for the evening, so I didn't get pictures of all the other work I got done.
I'm finally getting to closing in the double track curved tunnel. Here I have covered the tunnel with red wood fence boards. I put a cleat on the underside of each board on the far side of the tunnel just to hold the boards in place.
Next I covered the tunnel in plastic. I am hoping the plastic will keep both the red wood and the tunnel dry. Even though red wood is rot resistant, if will last longer if it is dry. The hill over the tunnel will be "Sierra Mountains" covered in evergreen trees, so there will be water in the dirt. We do also get some rain here, so I want to make sure the tunnel stays dry when it rains.
I will be sculpting a mountain stream using concrete to conduit the water from the pond filter to the pond. The cascading waterfall is a "pot rock" I picked up a landscaping supply for $0.14 a pound. Here are a couple more views of the "pot rock" waterfall.
A new addition to my small stock of locomotives arrived this week. Seen here is my new Hartland 2-6-0. I will eventually be relettering the tender. Plans now are to have this loco haul gold ore for the Black Widow Gold Mine.
